Anxiety

12 days to departure, visa not yet in hand. This all seemed like such a good idea 15 months ago. I have not been in Asia for 32 years. I have forgotten almost all my Chinese.

I believe in the kindness of strangers.

Heidi Vardeman: Xinyang, Henan, China; In September 2009 I leave my post as a minister in Minnesota to spend four months in China. Though I majored in Chinese at college, "Red China" was closed to Americans back then. I made it only as far as foreign study at the Chinese University of Hong Kong while HK was a British colony. The recipient of a Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Grant, I am fulfilling a lifelong dream of visiting the "Middle Kingdom."
